Personal Statement
Question #3
I can personally say that I am a person of many talents. A skill of mine is that I am a fast learner. Being a fast learner can really come in handy when you have a week to learn a method and you have a test on it a week later. I like that it don’t take me that long to practice something and then I’ll have it down. Most of my peers in my classes struggle sometimes in the subject that my teacher is teaching. I like being able to help out my friends whenever they don’t understand a concept. When things get rough I like to picture myself alone. When I am alone I can focus better on what is really going on. If you overthink what’s going on around you it’ll only make it harder on yourself. Ever since I was in sixth grade I knew that I had a thing for certain subjects and that my learning ability was faster than others. Even though I can understand things pretty quick I can also struggle too. I am just like any other learner here at Lindsay High and I do have hard times in classes as well. Nobody is perfect and I’m not saying I’m even close to being perfect but I value this skill that I was born with. In my math class last year there was a senior in my class that was having a really hard time understanding measurement topic eight and I helped her out even though I wasn’t on the same topic as her. I was able to help her pass and finally finish the class. Little things like that make me feel better about myself. If I were a senior and struggling in math someone like me would’ve been a blessing. As corny as that sounds I do believe that I can help someone understand things in a different way. I either break it down in a different set of steps or explain it slower for them. If you have the chance to help someone in need why not do it.
Question #4
In my four years here at Lindsay High a lot has changed. My freshman year compared to my senior year is really different. The goal has always been the same though. Learning facilitators want you to succeed and pass their class. No teacher wants you to fall behind or have to retake their class. A good source that helped me is where I am at today is the website called Educate. Educate was helpful for a lot of students because it allowed you to check up on your classes and work that you needed to complete. It even would show you your level of attendance which would also come in handy for someone that keeps track of that. It was very useful for parents as well. Your parents were able to check up on your grades to see what you needed in order to finish a course. It was nearly impossible for you to be clueless on what work you needed. There was no excuse on why you didn’t have work done. On Educate you had the ability to even look years back. For example; you’re a senior and you need some type of credit to graduate, go back to sophomore year maybe even freshman year is there something you’re missing. You can easily turn old assignments in and simple as that you just added yourself the credits you needed. You were also able to take a look at your life-skills as well. There are some learners that don’t take their life-skills seriously. I’ve learned the hard way that your life-skills are very important not only as a learner but as an individual. You need to have self-control and behave in your classroom in order to get a good life-skills grade. The grade level went from 1, 2, 3, and a 4. Believe it or not life-skills can and will hold you back if you mess around and act like it don’t bother you. I used this source to overcome educational barriers because it helped me check up on my own work without having to go to my teacher and ask about what work was needed from me. I took it upon myself and did what I had to do in order to be on pace by the end of the semester.
Question #5
The most significant challenge I have faced here at Lindsay High was my sophomore year. When I was a sophomore I still thought everything was all good and that I wouldn’t struggle when I became a senior. I was wrong. Sophomore year was not as complicated as it was about to get in the years ahead of me. I had trouble finishing my math class because I was not paying enough attention and I did not care enough. That was my fault because little did I know that was an important class. I shouldn’t have slacked in that class because then I would’ve finished it when I was supposed to. It was never that it was too hard for me but more about me not knowing how bad this would affect me years later. Whenever junior year came around that’s when it hit me. I was behind a year in math because I hadn’t showed much interest the year before that. It sucked knowing that I had tenth graders in my class because it made me feel less of myself in a way. Junior year my math teacher told the class that the year after this everything would change. He said that there would no longer be a geometry class that it would all be integrated math instead. It was around second semester that I made the decision to switch math teachers because I wasn’t progressing as much as I wanted to. I wanted to move at a faster pace and needed more one-on-one time with my learning facilitator. Since I was a junior in a class that was with other grades my teacher would be hopping all over the place helping out other students. I switched to Mr. Dussan and finished by the end of the year. I am a fast learner so it didn’t take long for me to get my act together and start turning in work. I had the chance to actually get this done and I did whatever it took in order to finish. Towards the end of the year I felt accomplished because I had finished my math class.
Question #6
My favorite academic subject that they teach here at Lindsay High would have to be Spanish. I have had the course for two years and I can honestly say that it has helped me a lot. I took my first year of Spanish with Mr. Gutierrez my freshmen year. He was and still is a good teacher and an excellent listener. I am a Spanish speaker but I wasn’t as a fluent as others so it wasn’t as easy for me at first. Mr. Gutierrez helped me a lot in and outside of school whenever I needed his help. My second year of Spanish I had it was with Mr. Araque my sophomore year. He is no longer a teacher at Lindsay High but whenever he was there he would give me tips on how to understand things better. I appreciate little things like that because they helped me pass the class. This year I’ll be going into my third year in a Spanish class. I have improved so much from where I started two years ago. I am a Spanish speaker at home because my mom has trouble communicating with me in English. At first I would have trouble pronouncing and saying certain words in Spanish but now I feel like I can speak it correctly. This subject has influenced me because knowing two languages is a good thing to be able to say. It can also come in handy in several situations such as; if someone needs a translator and you’re the only one around to help or whenever you have a friend that needs help on an assignment. I like being able to help out my friends whenever they are having trouble in Spanish class. It’s changed my life for the better because now I know Spanish and can speak it I can teach others as well if needed. I know that it’s not as easy for others with different races it’s always good to have someone that knows what they’re saying helping you improve. It’s not impossible but it does take time and definitely some effort if you actually want to learn.
